1. Visit Ledger.com/start

Open your browser (preferably one you trust, not public/shared) and go to ledger.com/start. You’ll be led to a page that prompts you to install Ledger Live (desktop or mobile).

2. Download Ledger Live App

Ledger.com/start offers genuine download links. Choosing the right version (Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS) ensures you don’t grab a fake or tampered app.

After installation, open the app and let it update to the latest version. This also adds security patches and new coin support.

3. Connect Your Ledger Device & Initialize

Connect (via USB or Bluetooth depending on model) your Ledger device. The Live app will detect it and guide you to initialize as new or restore from a recovery phrase.

Choose “Initialize as new” if it’s fresh. When asked, set your PIN code. Be sure to memorize it (but don’t write it in a risky place).

4. Secure Your Recovery Phrase (Seed)

This is the most critical part. Ledger Live will show you *24 words* (for Ledger devices that use 24-word seeds). Write them on the included recovery sheet (or buy a metal backup). Ensure no one else sees them.

You’ll later confirm a few words to validate your backup.

5. Install Apps for Cryptocurrencies

In Ledger Live’s “Manager” tab, install apps (e.g. Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana) on your device. These apps let the device interact with specific blockchain networks.

Each app takes a small memory footprint; choose only what you need.

6. Add Accounts & Receive Crypto

Go to “Accounts → Add account → Choose coin” in Ledger Live. Then Ledger will generate your public addresses. Use those to receive funds.

Always verify the address on the device screen — not just inside the app interface — to prevent “replacement by malware” attacks.

7. Send, Swap, and Manage Assets

You can now send crypto, swap between tokens (if supported), and track your portfolio inside Ledger Live. All transactions must be confirmed *on the device itself*.

This “approval on device” is key: it ensures even if your computer is malicious, your wallet is safer.
